The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania is a unitary
Republic based on multiparty parliamentary democracy. It consists
of the Union Government and the Government of Zanzibar.
The Union Government is based on the Westminster model of
government, common in Commonwealth countries. The government
consists of three branches, the Executive, the gudiciary and
the Legislature.

| The Executive is led by the President, who is Head of State
and Head of Government. The President is assisted by the Vice
President, the Prime Minister and the Cabinet of Minister. The
Cabinet, including the Prime Minister is appointed by the President
from among members of the National Assembly. |
| The judiciary consists of the Court of Appeal of the United
Republic of Tanzania, the High Court of Tanzania, the High Court
of Zanzibar, Magistrates Courts and Primary Courts. The Tanzania
legal system is based on common law. The Tanzania Law Reform
Commission is responsible for the review of the country's laws. |
The Parliament of the United Republic is unicameral. It consists
of two parts, namely, the President and the National Assembly.
The National Assembly is derived from elected members and the
Attorney General who is an ex-officio member.
The Parliament is headed by the Speaker who is assisted by the
Deputy Speaker and the Clerk to the National Assembly as Head
of the Secretariat of the National Assembly. For better discharge
of its functions the National Assembly has various Standing
Committees. |
